About Us

HISTORY

The College of Arts and Letters, one of the emerging colleges of Bicol University, was born on September 10, 2004 by virtue of Board of Regents Resolution (BOR) No. 75, series of 2004. It was formed when the AB English program of the former College of Arts and Sciences (BUCAS) and the Bachelor of Communication Arts major in Speech and Theater Arts, Journalism, and Audio-Visual Communication of the then Institute of Communication and Cultural Studies merged together in response to manpower pooling and resources as envisioned in the BU Comprehensive Development Plan (COMDEV). BUCAL continues to adapt to the global challenges of the times by pursuing innovations and changes in support of the four mandated functions of the university on instruction, research extension and production.

In the third quarter of 2006, a feasibility study which aimed to identify the distinctive features of the Bachelor of Arts in Broadcasting, the demand for broadcast and related skills in the current job market, and the prospects for employment was conducted by Dr. Agnes J. Nepomuceno.

The findings of the study revealed that there is a great demand for AB Broadcasting graduates in the industry and employment firms, a great number of students are interested to take the course, and not a single school in the city of Legazpi or the province of Albay offers the aforementioned course.

On the 29th of February, 2008, the Board of Regents of Bicol University released Resolution No. 009, also known as A RESOLUTION APPROVING THE OFFERING OF THE CURRICULUM FOR BACHELOR OF ARTS IN BROADCASTING STARTING 1ST SEMESTER OF SCHOOL YEAR 2008-2009. Based on said resolution, BUCAL began offering the course and accepted enrollees for the program the following semester.

On 2009, the Commission on Higher Education released CMO No. 20 entitled POLICIES AND STANDARDS FOR BACHELOR OF ARTS IN BROADCASTING which adopted and promulgated the general principles and guidelines for the establishment and operation of the AB Broadcasting programs in all higher educational institutions. Because of CMO No. 20 of 2009, BUCAL called for a revision of the curriculum of its AB Broadcasting program on April 15, 2010.
