About Us

The Institute of Physical Education, Sports and Recreation functions both as a degree- granting unit of Bicol University and as a service college for General Education Curriculum (GEC) in Physical Education. As a degree-granting unit, it offers a four-year Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE), Certificate in Physical Education and Masters in Physical Education. As a service college, the Institute takes charge of the Physical Education courses in the different units of the University, which took effect during the implementation of the Comprehensive Plan of the Bicol University.

Prior to the implementation of the ComDev Plan, Physical Education was taught in the different Colleges with their own faculty in the PE Department. On April 18, 1995 the Board of Regents through its BOR Resolution no. 21, series of 1995, approved the institutionalization of the unit to decentralize the teaching of Physical Education and to empower the Institute in the implementation of its programs. With this, faculty teaching PE from the different colleges was transferred to the Institute to form part of the teaching. Hence, marked a milestone in the history of the Institute.

Five years after, the Certificate in Physical Education, a special program in the College of Education was officially transferred to the Institute of Physical Education, Sports and Recreation by virtue of the BOR Resolution No. 38, s. 2000. The program is designed for non-PE graduates who were assigned and intend to teach Physical Education. In addition, in December 2000, BOR Resolution No. 147, series of 2000 approved the offering of the Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE), which was first implemented in school year 2001. Its objective is to produce competent teachers in Physical Education for the tertiary level, and to develop sports, fitness, dance and recreation trainers/consultants.

In 2010, BOR Resolution No.009, s. 2010, approved the revision of the curriculum for Master of Arts in Teaching Physical Education (MAT-PE) to Master of Arts in Physical Education (with thesis) and Master of Arts in Physical Education (without thesis) to be attuned to the recent trends in education giving emphasis on science based movement education, practicality and output oriented in compliance with the policies, guidelines and standards for graduate education programs embodied in the CMO No. 53, s. 2007. These graduate programs are presently lodged in the Bicol University Graduate School.

Later in 2014, BOR Board Resolution No. 105, s. 2014, approved the proposed enhancement of the Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) program to Bachelor of Physical Education Major in Sports and Wellness Management (BPE-SWM) to meet the need for a specialist who is empowered, physically educated, fitness and wellness literate in the regional, national and global communities as well. The revision is in compliance with the CMO No. 23, s. of 2011. The enhanced program is implemented this First Semester School Year 2015 – 2016.

Through the years, the Institute has increased its enrolment since its first year of implementation in 2001 and has produced successful graduates. The table below presents the list of courses offered in the Institute of Physical Education, Sports and Recreation and its accreditation levels.
