Thursday March 25,2021

Two separate writeshops intended to help researchers on their manuscript and publication were held by Bicol University College of Education (BUCE) and Publication and Knowledge Management Division (PKMD) this month.

BUCE, through its Research Office (RO), conducted Publish or Perish: A Special Publication Writeshop for BUCE Faculty Researchers at the Manhattan Beach Resort, Sto. Domingo, Albay on March 11 to 13, 2021.

Headed by the BUCE RO Research Coordinator Prof. January M. Dechavez, the said activity generally aims to produce publishable paper for the special issue of BU R&D Journal.

The program proper commenced with a welcome remarks from BUCE Dean Dr. Lorna M. Miña followed by messages from BU President Arnulfo M. Mascariñas, BU Vice President for Research, Development and Extension (VPRDE) Dr. Luis O. Amano, and PKMD Director Dr. Benedicto B. Balilo Jr.

To share experiences and expertise in the field, Ateneo De Naga University (ADNU) Office of Research and Creative Endeavors Dean Margarita Felipe Fajardo discussed Research Publication (FEAR NOT!). After the open forum and initial presentation of manuscripts and peer critiquing of the draft by group took place. The first day concluded with a Researcher’s Night at the resort.

The second day focused on the discussion of BU R&D Journal Editor-In-Chief (EIC) Prof. Jonathan Jaime G. Guerrero on Practical Publication Tips. Afterwards, open forum and consultations with the speaker took place followed by the presentation of manuscripts and peer critiquing of the 2nd drafts.

On the last day of the activity, participants finalized their publishable manuscripts and presented it for critiquing followed by the impression, feedback, and evaluation of the papers where it was submitted to the organizers.

To conclude the event, Prof. Dechavez delivered the closing remarks and acknowledgements on the organizers behalf.

On the other hand, PKMD, under the office of the VPRDE, also held a three-day ‘Writeshop and Mentoring Program on Writing Publishable Articles in Refereed Journals’ at the Ninong’s Hotel, Legazpi City on March 17 to 19.

The activity provided support and mentored faculty researchers in preparing publishable papers to produce high quality research articles for the BU R&D Journal’s bid on international indexing. The participants were researchers with completed research works for the last three years who were recommended by their College Deans.

The program proper commenced with a welcome message from BU VPRDE Dr. Luis O. Amano followed by BU President Mascariñas. The first day of the activity focused on the basics of academic writing, proper citation (APA Format), do’s and don’ts, and some tips in producing quality article as discussed by Center for Policy Studies and Development (CPSD) Technical Staff Dr. Gremil Alessandro Naz. Afterwards BU R&D EIC Prof. Jonathan Jaime G. Guerrero presented the topic, Experiences in Writing Publishable Paper in International/National Refereed Journal and shared tips in writing different parts of a technical paper.  He also stayed throughout the duration of the activity to mentor the participants.

On the second day, BU President Mascariñas graced the occasion by providing a brief discussion of the results of the recently-released QS World University Rankings wherein the university garnered three ratings out of five stars.  While this first attempt of submitting for assessments in teaching, employability, academic development, facilities, social responsibility, and inclusiveness is laudable, he encouraged the audience to improve on internationalization and engage on aspects which were not yet submitted for assessment.  These include research, online learning, subject ranking, arts and culture, and innovation.

On its last day, seven participants were able to turn in their articles. The rest of the participants were given until March 26 for submission. The live-in academic activity was attended by a total of 15 faculty researchers. Standard health protocols as per IATF requirements were strictly observed.

The three-day workshop was hosted by Prof. Janet I. Triunfante and facilitated by Prof. Carlos V. Cortez Jr. and Prof. Jonathan Jaime G. Guerrero. (Ma. Elma Mirandilla, PKMD)
