BU score wins in visual and music competitions at 2018 PASUC-5 Culture and Arts Fest

Showcasing Bicolano talent in culture and arts, delegates from the eight universities and colleges belonging to the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) of Region 5 gathered at Bicol University College of Arts and Letters (BUCAL) to take part of this year’s PASUC-5 Culture and Arts Festival this November 09.

Participants from Bicol University emerged victorious in the visual arts contests with Nelson Villaflor bagging the first place in the photo contest, Rani Dado earning the second place in Pencil Drawing, Mark Kim Villar in third place for the On-the-spot Poster Making contest, Christian Berjuega in fourth place for Charcoal Rendering, and Jomari Claveria getting the fourth place in the Painting competition.

BU’s competitors for the visual arts competitions were coached by Prof. Dennis Mirabueno and Prof. Jaried Millare.

Themed “Positioning Higher Education for Strategic Global Transformation Through Culture and the Arts”, the 2018 PASUC-5 Culture and Arts Festival featured competitions in visual and performing arts that highlights the cultural richness of the Bicol region. This year’s Mr. and Ms. PASUC-5 and Mr. and Ms. State Colleges and Universities Athletics Association (SCUAA) were also crowned during the said celebration.

At the beginning of the activity, BU President Arnulfo M. Mascariñas, on behalf of the host university, welcomed the visitors and participants of the gathering in his opening remarks. This was followed by a special message from Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges (CSPC) President and PASUC-5 Chairperson Dr. Dulce F. Atian.

Before the competition proper officially began, PASUC-5 Cultural Coordinator Prof. Dennis R. Mirabueno introduced the participants of the contests. The competitions were participated in by students from Bicol University (BU), Catanduanes State University (CSU), Sorsogon State College (SSC), Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA), Bicol State College of Applied Sciences and Technology (BSCAST), Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges (CSPC), and the Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology (DEBEMSCAT).

Around 150 students participated in the visual arts competitions at BUCAL’s student lounge, the musical competition at the BU amphitheatre, and the Mr. and Ms. PASUC-5/SCUAA-5 pageant (also in the BU amphitheatre). In the afternoon, the winners of the competitions were announced.

For the visual arts competitions, Mr. Earl Recamunda, Mr. Mark Alvic Esplana, and Mr. Jay Lawrence Raon were among the judges. The Painting, On-the-spot Poster Making, Charcoal Rendering, and Pencil Drawing competitions were judged by Arch. Alain Davis Acosta, Djai Tanji, and Joper John Ofrasio.

For the musical competitions, the Vocal Solo (Kundiman), Pop Solo, and Vocal Duet contests were judged by Mr. Edgar Narce Jr., Mr. Celger Venzon and Dr. Shirley Maloles, while the Instrumental Solo for Banduria and Classical Guitar, and Live Band contests were judged by Mr. Roger Fernandez, Mr. Ramil Chavenia, and Mr. Richard Madrilejos.

BU’s representatives in the musical contests, under the guidance of Prof. Apple Rubio and Prof. Inocencio Bermundo as coaches, finished the competition strong. They are Andrea Nocete at first place for the Banduria Solo contest, JM Grageda at first place for the Classical Guitar competition, Mark Sevilla also in first place for the Kundiman Vocal Solo contest, Christian Lorica at fourth place for the Pop Vocal Solo contest, and the tandem of Hannah Bite and Chette Linga winning third place for the Vocal Duet competition.

The students from BU also brought home the gold for the pageant, as Lance Reyeg won the Mr. PASUC-5 2018 title and the ‘Best in Casual Attire’ award’, with Zaira Corbe earning the Ms. PASUC-5 2018 title, ‘Best in Casual Attire’, and ‘Miss Photogenic’ awards.
