March 3 and 4, 2013 was an important event in the Bicol University’s College of Medicine. A group of professionals from the DOH, BRTTH, BCRHD, the BU College of Nursing and the BU College of Medicine, came to participate in a 2 day seminar- workshop that aimed to focus the College’s research energies into relevant, aligned activities.
Dr. Jesson Butcon, the Research Coordinator of the College presented the following objectives of the workshop:
- Familiarize with the NUHRA, RUHRA and Institutional priorities for research.
- Understand the role and function of a clear research agenda nexus teaching and service.
- Identify strategic programs and projects to operationalize the mission and realize the vision of BUCM.
- Plan for the systematic monitoring and evaluation of outputs, outcome and impacts of the MD-MPA as an R& D program.
Dr. Jaime Montoya, the Executive Director of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) touched on the country’s health research directions. He emphasized that there was a need or good governance with engagement with national, international agencies, public-private (PP) partnership for research activities that shouldinvolve various professionals. Different sectors should come together to craft a unified research agenda. He informed the participants that the national government had allotted money for health research through the Health Systems Bill Law signed by President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino in May, 2013. This law appropriated money for health research. In his words, “…health research is a priority of the national government. Every year, funding for research increases. “ He observed that most of the researches approved for funding were from Metro Manila. To distribute resources, he was very willing to recommend good and relevant researches based in the regions. Doctors in the region shall not only be clinicians but also researchers who could influence systems that can address the health needs of Bicolanos. Read more…
