2013: The BU College of Medicine in a Nutshell

The establishment of a College of Medicine in Bicol University was approved by the BU Board of Regents on September 3, 2012. A week later, a three-person Technical Panel on Health Professional Education from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) led by Dr. Alberto Roxas of UPM with Drs. Alfaretta Reyes of UERMMMCI, and Miguel Noche of PRC visited the BU on September 10. The panel suggested a major revision to the curriculum to make this more relevant to the 21st century. A strategic planning workshop was held at the BU on October 5 and 6 with the participation of BU officials, a newly formed College of Medicine (CM) consultants (Drs. Ruben N. Caragay, Nemuel Fajutagana, Leila De La Llana, Antonio Nemesio B. Yap and Teresa Salome S. Ludovice-Yap), and other stakeholders in the government and private sectors. This was followed by a series of workshops on curriculum development and syllabi writing (for Year I and 2 of the medical curriculum) by the CM consultants in Quezon City on November 8-10, 2012 and April 3 and 4, 2013 (this time, joined by Dr. Jesson V. Butcon). On January 3, 2013, the CM consultants and resource persons from some medical schools in Manila met to identify other issues and concerns related to the establishment of a medical school particularly the BU College of the Medicine.
