DOST awards Academic Excellence to 25 BU Grads

Twenty five (25) Bicol University (BU) cum laude graduates received the DOST Seal of Academic Excellence, which was given to a total of 42 awardees all over the region, during the awarding ceremony, “In Touch with Excellence 2016” held by the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office V (DOST-RO V) on May 31, 2016 at the AVP Function Hall, Legazpi City.

The award was presented to DOST scholar-graduates who satisfactorily complied with the high academic standards of their school, thereby receiving honors.

“Without a doubt, Bicol Region is a home of bright scholars and future leaders,” said Engr. Alex Elegado, OIC Director of DOST Regional Office V, who addressed the awardees during the ceremony.

Currently, 897 scholars are enrolled in various SUCs and selected HEIs in the region.  According to Elegado, almost 400 DOST scholars are in BU, enrolled in its various colleges and campuses offering Science and Technology courses.

To become a DOST scholar, a student must take and pass a qualifying comprehensive test administered annually by the institute, and must enroll in any of the Science and Technology priority courses identified by DOST.

The DOST Science Education Institute supports deserving students in pursuing academic excellence by paying for their tuition fees and providing each scholar a monthly stipend, book allowance, and transportation allowance (if studying outside the province).

The scholarship program aims to hasten the advancement of science and technology in the country, towards socio-economic development.  This was emphasized by Elegado in his speech, where he also challenged the awardees to contribute to this aim.

“Dare to become someone and be a productive member of the society.  So, as the tagline goes, ‘Make S&T your Future, Be a DOST Scholar’, let us all work together for a Smarter Philippines,” Elegado challenged.

The event also served as a tribute to proud parents who guided the scholars’ journey.  The DOST gave them tokens of appreciation.  (Judy Bongala, Batch 2016 BUTC BSEd Math graduate).
