Awardees in 2017 Search for Bicol University's Most Outstanding Alumni

The commendable contributions to the society and in their field of expertise paved the way to an award and recognition of nine BU alumni.  The awards were given last September 22, 2017 at the Bicol University Exemplar Awards ceremonyheld at Hotel St. Ellis, Rizal St., Legaspi City Port District, Legazpi City.

Of the awardees, eight were screened/evaluated by a committee formed in Bicol University, in connection with its 48th Founding Anniversary while PSSupt. Joel B. Doriawas given a special award in recognition of his winning as one of the Outstanding Filipinos in the search initiated by Metrobank Foundations.

The Search for Outstanding BU Alumni was one of the awards identified in the Bicol University Exemplar Awards.  The 2017 Most Distinguished alumni awardees were: Dr. Myrna Llona-Audal, on Corporate Social Responsibility; Mr. Jeremy Atun Cruz on education; Atty. Joanne Lanuzga-Intia for Peace and Social Cohesion; Mr. Joel Loquinario Navarro in Food and Industrial Technology; Dr. Leilani Diaz-Pavilando for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; Mr. Ferdie Armario Sevilla in Human Resource and Development; and Mr. Rico Roberto Zuñiga for Information and Communication Technology.The 2017 Most Outstanding BU Alumni award was given to Dr. Minerva Isorena-Morales, the first President of Catanduanes State University.

Dr. Minerva Isorena- Morales

2017 Most Outstanding Alumna 

She graduated from the Bicol University College of Fisheries in 1976 with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Fisheries. Her stature as President of Catanduanes State University connotes of accomplishments Bicol University can be proud of for its alumni.  In the highly competitive academic arena, the post of the president is earned through merits.

President Morales is an epitome of the ideals Bicol University holds, Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service.  As first President of the

Catanduanes State University, and having led the former Catanduanes State College to a university status speaks of her accomplishments as a leader and service in the academic community.  The various positions that she held in CSU is a testament of her leadership acumen at all levels of the bureaucracy.

She graduated with honors when she took her Doctor of Education, Major in Educational Management.  She was a scholar when she pursued her Master of Science in Fisheries. She keeps herself updated through various trainings, seminars and conferences and membership in professional and cause-oriented organizations.  She has published articles in refereed journals, in scientific publications, popular publications, and co-authored books.

Dr.Myrna Llona-Audal

Most Distiguished Alumna in Corporate Social Responsibility

Having been adjudged as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Students (TOYS) by the Rotary Club of Legazpi City and graduated from College of Education in 1971 as the 1st Magna Cum Laude of Bicol University.  She started teaching at St. Agnes Academy and now she is

the School Administrator at Vallejo Unified School District, California. She was the Teacher of the Year Awardee at Wardlaw Elementary School in 2010-2011 and 2016-2017.  

In 2016, she was awarded by the Vallejo Unified School District the coveted title, Teacher of the Year to represent the City Of Vallejo in the 2016-2017 Solano County Educators of the Year Competition.

Dr. Audal leads a professional life observing the values instilled to her by Bicol University and making sure that she embraces BU's 4 pillars.

She is the co-founder of the Co-founder of Bicol University Alumni Endowment Management Council on Foundations, Inc., and Co-chair of Audal Foundation that provides sustainable scholarship and awards to deserving BU students.  She, too is the Co-founder and Secretary of Bicol University Alumni Association USA Internationale (BUAAUSAI).

Atty. Joanne Lanuzga Intia

Most Distiguished Alumna in Peace and Social Cohesion

She graduated from Bicol University Tabaco Campus as Cum Laude with a degree in BS Social Work. In her years of stay in the Bicol University, she has shown exemplary performance both in the academics and in other co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.  She was a leader of various college-based organizations.  After graduation in March, 2012  she worked in Christian Foundation for Children and Aging as a Project Worker serving sponsored children and families.

Driven by her dreams of uplifting herself and better serve the people, she enrolled Bachelors of Laws and became a full-fledged lawyer in 2010. She was also awarded of Medalya ng Papuri and Kasanayan last July and August, 2017. Currently, she is connected with Bureau of Fire Protection Quezon City as a Senior Inspector.

Ms. Intia's accomplishments aided communities on how to prevent and suppress destuctive fire, a man-made disaster.  Through their efforts, peoples' lives and properties are secured.

Mr. Joel Loquinario Navarro

Most Distiguished Alumnus in Food and Industrial Technology

He graduated from Bicol University College of Industrial Technology in 1999, cumlaude with a degree Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education, Major in Electronics.  He too, graduated with his Master's Degree in Industrial Education with specialization in Administration and Supervision.

He is now connected with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).  He became a Member of the Regional Expert Panel for Trainers Methodology E-Learning Material Developer wherein he validates the quality of TVET Trainers and Assessors in TESDA Region V.  He is Lead Assessor in Computer System Servicing NC2.  He too, is aTESDA Master Assessor- validating the quality of National Assessment in Region V.

He extended service for the OFWs as an Onsite Assessor in Dubai, Ryadh, Alcubar and Kuwait to promote the welfare of OFW including the displaced worker in the Middle-East.  He is a a Lakan Ilaw Awardee (Outstanding Employee) TESDA National Level.

Mr. Navarro has been doing extra mile in his field of specialization by sharing his technical expertise to the community.

Dr. Leilani Diaz Pavilando

Most Distiguished Alumna in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries

Dr. Leilani Diaz-Pavilando accepting her award as Most Distinguished alumna in the field of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

She graduated from Bicol University in her Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate Degree. A professor 6 of Bicol University, she has rendered thirty eight (38) fruitful years in government service.  She had thirteen (13) years with National Food and Authority and became a Finalist at the National Level for Best Community eCenter Manager by the DOST as well as one hundred (100) Outstanding telecenter Women of the World by the and Asia Pacific telecenter network.

She received various awards in Research with her Developmental Research on Rehabilitation Strategies for Calamity Stricken Cocobased farms in 2011 and Family Preparedness: the Basics in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management at the University and Regional Level in 2016.

She is a Board of Director/Incorporator of the SUC Extension Managers Association of the Philippines as well as her High School Batch Presidency and other mmbership in various Professional and Civic Organizations.  Along with all of these is her service to farmers and the communities where she transfers both social and agricultural technologies and partners with other institutions on her extension programs and projects to improve their quality of life.


Most Distinguished Alumnus in Management and Human Resource Development

Mr. Ferdie Armario Sevilla graduated from the Bicol University College of Education in 1998 with a degree in Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English.  In June, 1999, he worked as an English Teacher (full time

substitute) at Banquerohan National High School, Legaspi City.  Not satisfied of his work in the Philippines, he applied and was hired as an English teacher at Ekamai, Bangkok, Thailand in March, 2000 to 2001.  He must be the adventurous person, that he again applied as a teacher at Stockholm International School in Sweden in 2003 to 2005.  From October, 2010 to present, he is the Quality and Development Manager, International Preschool Principal, Pedagogical Leader, Project Leader and Preschool's principal Mentor in three International Preschools in Stockholm, Sweden.

He continued his professional advancement and studied at Stockholm Institute of Education, Department of Social and Cultural Studies in Education.  He completed the academic requirements for his Masters of Social Sciences in Comparative and International Education at Stockholm University, Institute of International Education. He is presently working on his National School Leadership Training Programme in the same university.

As part of his advocacy to reach out to the less fortunate of the Filipinos, and his way of paying back his own country, he is involved in the Global Citizenship Project.  In April, 2016, under his leadership, two of Futuraskolan's Preschool Principal's visited Banquerohan Elementary School and the Special Education classes.  They worked as volunteers.  They too, donated materials in order to allow further development and more learning possibilities.  The project is ongoing and expected to run for an indefinite period of time.

Mr. Sevilla also assisted the typhoon victims of Albay out of his own personal funds with the assistance from other Swedish nationals.  Indeed, Mr. Sevilla lived up to the ideals of Bicol University, that of Leadership, Scholarship, Character and Service.


Most Distinguished Alumnus in Information and Communication Technology

Mr. Rico Roberto Zuñiga getting his award as one of the Most Distinguished Alumni in Informaion and Communication Technology

Mr. Zuñiga is a BS Computer Science graduate from the Bicol University College of Science in 2004 and awarded as Best Programmer.

He must be very loyal to Bicol University having finished not only his college education at BUCS, but also his elementary and High School education at the BU Laboratory High Schools.

He is now a product-focused lead software engineer with multiple projects launched in different verticals during the last 14 years.  He worked on diverse projects using a variety of development frameworks, processes and programming languages.  Aside from developing software, he is also passionate about continuous learning and sharing knowledge to the community through writing, teaching and training.

Mr. Zuniga began making contributions in the field of IT since 2003 when he developed one of the first Filipino-made computer game called Tongits in 2003.  He improved and commercialized the game until it was acquired by Gaming Network Solutions in 2014.  He also developed the first CPA board exam REVIEWER chatbot called Hoppy.  Acquired by in 2016, it is now being used by more than 29,000 students.

Part of his significant accomplishments is when he co-founded Bicol Information Technology Organization in 2013, a non-profit technology advocacy organization in the Bicol Region composed of IT industry professionals, educators and students.  Their primary objective is to share expertise and conduct regular technology talks for free to students and professionals to address the training needs and expose others to the latest trends in information technology.

He partnered with Google to bring the first Google I/O event in Bicol.
