BU’s Team Initiatex claims victory in regional ‘HackForGov’ challenge; to represent Bicol in nationals

October 11, 2023

Bicol University students dominated the 2nd Regional HackForGov Cyber Challenger 2023 on September 21, 2023, organized by the Department of Information and Communication Technology and the Computer Emergency Response Team – Philippines.

Team Initiatex, composed of 4th-year Information Technology students from the College of Science: Menchie Belarmino, Gairus Niel Legaspi, Luis Anthony Grado, and Benedick Binlayo, emerged as the overall champion competition against 10 teams from different schools in the region.

HackForGov involves a computer security exercise where hidden ‘flags’ are concealed within intentionally vulnerable programs or websites.

The primary objective of the HackForGov competition is to accelerate the development of cybersecurity skills among students and encourage them to pursue a career in this field. It seeks to expand the pool of proficient individuals in cybersecurity, foster problem-solving abilities necessary for detecting and mitigating cyber threats through real-world challenges, and identify talented students to represent the Philippines in international capture-the-flag competitions

The team will represent the Bicol region for the upcoming HackForGov Nationals on October 16, 2023, at the Manila Prince Hotel. (Prof. Noli B. Lucila Jr., BUCS Faculty)
