RESEARCH ENGAGEMENT
The Research and Development thrusts of the Bicol University College of Nursing are focused on
the priority areas set in the National/ Regional Unified Health Research Agenda,
by the national/regional agencies such as the Department of Health and that of the University.
These researches are undertaken by the faculty of the college as part of the major function along with
instruction, extension and production. These researches may be a research program,
research project or a study. Funding comes either from Bicol Consortium HRD,
the Department of Health, and the University.
The students also undertake researches primarily in partial fulfillment of the requirements in
Bachelor of Science in Nursing, since one of the Key Areas of Responsibility for Nursing Graduates is Research.
OBJECTIVES:
- To provide direction for research in health and related fields consistent with the university,
regional and national research thrusts. - To enhance/strengthen faculty and students research attitude and capabilities along health-related field.
- To strengthen and broaden access to opportunities and resources thru linkages with other agencies.
- To utilize research outputs in policy formulation, improvement of technology and innovation in
nursing education and health care management. - To update faculty and students on current trends along research.
Guided by these objectives, the BUCN Research Unit has undertaken the following activities for
the School Year 2016-2017.
FACULTY R&D ACTIVITIES
1. RESEARCH PROPOSAL REVIEW AND EVALUATION WORKSHOP
In order to review and evaluate research proposals from the College of Nursing,
the BU Research and Development Center in coordination with the BU College of Nursing
conducted a one day Research Proposal Review and Evaluation Workshop
last August 18, 2016 at the BUCN Function Hall.
A total of eight faculty research proposals with sub-studies were presented and reviewed by the Panel of Evaluators composed of the
Director of BCHRD Michael Montealegre, Associate Director of R&D Lester Narvaez,
Marlyn Daguno, RN, Ph.D, Yolanda Julieta B. Buan, Angelo P. Candelaria, and Luis Amano, Ph.D.
2. 4th INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIVE CONFERENCE
The BUCN has collaborated with Philippine Nurses Association of America Foundation Inc. (PNAAF)
and the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) Albay Chapter to host the
4th International Collaborative Conference which was held at
The Venezia Hotel Convention Hall last January 19-20, 2017. This event provided an opportunity for the Faculty to present their research undertaking.
The Best Paper Award was given to the research entitled,
“Knowledge and Practices of Clients, Health Care Providers and Local Government Units on
Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Tuberculosis-Directly Observed Treatment Short Course” authored by
Alma S. Banua,Ed.D, Jean Annette S. Ibo,Ed.D. and Richard L. Bartolata, Ph.D
and presented by Alma S. Banua, Ed.D.
The Second Best Paper Award was given to the research entitled
“Level of Compliance of the Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management Council of the Province of Sorsogon authored and presented by Nera A. Galan, PhD.
3. 1st NATIONAL RESEARCH CONFERENCE
Four faculty members from the Bicol University College of Nursing, Maria Janet O. Recierdo, Ph.D,
Nera A. Galan, Ph.D, Mary Joy B. Sande, Ph.DNEd and Charina J. Cipcon, MN, had their respective research
undertaking accepted for paper presentation during the 1st National Research Conference last March 10-12, 2017 held at the BU Amphitheater.
The theme for this year’s conference is “Trailblazing in STEAM (Science, Technology, Education,
Arts and Management).” This activity is an opportunity for the personnel to showcase
quality researches and be able to interact with graduate researchers and faculty
from other institutions of higher learning. Likewise, it aims to provide venues where
presented papers can be submitted for review and publication in refereed journals.

1. 2016 Joint Regional Symposium on Research, Development and Extension Highlights
The 2016 Joint Regional Symposium on Research, Development and Extension Highlights
was held last November 16, 2016 at the Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges, Camarines Sur
open both for Professional and Student Category.
BU College of Nursing is very proud to have won one award for the Professional Category and
six awards for the Student Category.

2. BUCN Research and Development Student Forum 2017
The BUCN Research and Development Student Forum 2017 was conducted at the
BUCN Function Hall and the Amphitheater last February 22, 2017. It is an annual activity of the college
whose primary objective is to provide the venue to stimulate interest and appreciation for research
among students and Faculty.

3. Patent Drafting for Students and Faculty
The six students who won in the BUCN Research Forum and one Faculty Adviser attended the
Patent Drafting for Students and Faculty last March 7 and 8, 2017 at the HERCC Amphitheater,
BU East Campus organized by the Bicol University Intellectual Property Rights Unit (IPRU).
This was participated by other student researchers from the BU College of Fisheries,
BU College of Engineering, BU College of Industrial Technology and BU College of Nursing.
After presenting the draft to the evaluators, the process of the research output of
Carlo J. Vibar and Beverly Anne Guerrero’s “A Process of Making an Ointment with
Tubli (Denis ellipticaBenth.)” and “A Process of Making a Concentrate from
Squash (Cocorbita maxima suprema)”respectively were accepted for
petty patent under the Utility Model category.
4. 13th BU R&D Forum
Bicol University Best Undergraduate Thesis 2017
Beating thirteen other contenders, the research titled “Efficacy of Squash (Cucurbita maxima sup.) Extract
on Ethylene Glycol Induce Urolithiasis in Male Sprague Dawley Rats”
authored by Beverly Ann A. Guerrero, Maria Yvita Queenne B. Ignacio, and Jowena Mae N. Noel
and presented by Beverly Ann A. Guerrero from the BU College of Nursing
clinched the Best Paper Award under the thematic area Social Development Promotion
(Developmental Category) in the recently concluded 13th BU R&D Forum held at the HERRC
Amphitheater last March 9-10, 2017.
The primary objective of this annual activity is to provide the venue to stimulate
interest and appreciation for research among students and Faculty.
BUCN joins annual check-up program
The BUCN Extension Service partner, the Legazpi City Polyclinic conducted in collaboration with its DOH Nurse Deployment Program (NDP) personnel an annual check-up to the residents of Barangay Boyoan who are temporarily sheltered at Albay Central School last February 21, 2018. As expected, the Bicol University College of Nursing’s presence was felt and appreciated in the said activity.
